Pride Patch Tutorial: Aromantic Alphabet

Six digitally-created versions of cross stitch pride patches, arranged in two rows of three, against a background of a textured partially-translucent aromantic pride flag. Aro Week feels like a good time to debut part four in my text patch miniseries: patterns for an A-Z alphabet of five-stripe lower-case letters for use in creating custom cross-stitched text patches and other needlecraft projects. Are you craving a patch reading “aromantic” in pride colours? What about “lithromantic”, “quoiflux” or “requiesromantic”? Or “no romo” or “fuck amatonormativity”?

These patterns will let you stitch the word or letters of your choosing in the colours of any horizontal five or ten striped flag design. Every letter also fits inside my A is for Aro frame patch pattern, allowing even more identities to display a pride-themed initial!

You’ll need familiarity with cross stitch (full crosses) and backstitch to make unedged patches, along with a buttonhole/closed blanket stitch to make the edged patches shown above. The first instalment of this patch tutorial series demonstrates cross and blanket/buttonhole stitch, while the second covers backstitch.

A is for Aro Pixel Art Icon Set

Continuing in my quest to post something new each day of @aggressivelyarospec‘s Aggressively Arospectacular 2020 event, today’s offering is for folks who can’t cross stitch their own pride patches: a set of pixel art icons and digital stickers based on my letter “a” cross stitch design.

Pride Cross Stitch: Butterfly Hoop

For @aggressivelyarospec‘s Aggressively Arospectacular 2020 week-long event, I have embarked upon a quest to post something creative each day.

I’m starting with a more subtle way of showing my pride: a butterfly pattern designed by Anne Mills and set into a plastic Daiso 15 cm hoop.

A cross stitch piece on white aida, set into a cream plastic embroidery hoop. The piece consists of three grey and white butterflies fluttering among sprays of green leaves and yellow/gold flowers. The butterflies have been outlined in glittery black thread, while the flowers are outlined in glittery gold thread. The hoop sits atop a blue microfibre blanket.

The pattern came as part of a cross stitch set published by Hinkler. It’s nice to work on pieces where I don’t have to first draft my own patterns, but for me the joy of cross stitch is the freedom to diverge from completely or perfectly reproducing someone else’s design (and adding a little more aro pride).

For this piece, I chose teal greens from the abro flag, yellow and gold from the allo-aro flag, and grey and white from the aromantic flag. I backstitched the outlines around the flowers and butterflies in gold and black metallic thread from DMC’s Light Effects range, which, unfortunately, doesn’t show well in a photograph.

(In person, it’s wonderfully sparkly without being overbearing, even in dim light.)

After two weeks of sewing, this hoop now hangs above my desk, where I can watch glittery butterflies feast on glittery allo-aro flowers. For folks wishing a subtle way to demonstrate their pride, sewing unrelated embroidery patterns in pride colours is a nice way to still show off the colours that represent us. One of the advantages about our aromantic-spectrum flags is that the preponderance of green well lends itself to floral designs!

DiOW: Booksellers Who Know Things

An ordinary day of selling, shelving and mending becomes less ordinary when a mysterious stranger saves Nevo from disaster while asking questions about fairy tales.

Setting: Two years before the beginning of the war referenced in Their Courts of Crows and Maybe When the Bones CrumbleDifferent in Other Ways introduces a brand-new set of characters and circumstances; readers don’t need any familiarity with my other works.

Content Advisory: A gay, quoiromantic man making eyes at another man against a culture of cissexism, heterosexism and working-class anxiety. Non-explicit references to sex and erotic media. Casual swearing.

The tinny, cracked bell rings out. Nevo, smoothing the endpapers of a newly re-covered almanac while wrestling with a desk too small to hold a stack of waiting books, the cashbox and his pot of congealing glue, looks up. Lenlil won’t abide anyone entering her store without an enthusiastic greeting, as much as Nevo doubts most customers welcome it. “Good morning! Morning? Good … noon?”

A stranger, dressed like a man, struts toward Nevo with his green felt cap askew. He winks at the young women giggling over a book’s lurid illustrations—Adelin and Yuissa on break from the drapery around the corner—and beams, crookedly, at Nevo.

Nevo lowers the scraper, smiles and turns. “How can I hel—oh, fuck!”

His elbow smacks into the pile of books.

The man’s gloved hands block the books a heartbeat before they cascade onto the glue. Nevo whisks aside the pot and brush, biting back a string of Da’s more colourful curses. Mending books supposedly brings in more money than sorting and selling them, but then why doesn’t Lenlil invest in a proper workshop? Or at least a desk big enough to hold his record book, the cashbox, glue and a few clamps?
